It’s no secret that people over 50 face challenges in the workplace, but there are many things they can do to keep their careers on track.
In a 2018 survey of 3,900 adults over age 45 by AARP, the advocacy group for older Americans, 61 percent of respondents said they had either seen or experienced age discrimination at work. Most of those surveyed said they believed age discrimination begins when people are in their 50s.
A 2017 report from AARP concluded that workers age 50 and older are more likely than other age groups to experience high levels of long-term unemployment, stagnant wages and declining job opportunities.
Despite such hurdles, there are strategies older workers can use to stay competitive. What follows are seven ways people over 50 can make sure they’re appreciated on the job.
